Using Digital Signage for Contactless Messaging

Planar · Craig Heiman · Nov 23, 20

According to AVIXA’s 2020 AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA), the digital signage market is expected to increase from $31 billion in 2020 to $42.7 billion in 2025 — a compound annual growth rate of 7.5%. The expansion of digital signage was (and is) being driven by growing demands in commercial verticals, including workplaces, hospitality, transportation and education, even before the global pandemic. Today, digital signage and wayfinding displays are more important than ever in supporting the logistical challenges these commercial verticals experience, providing contactless messaging solutions.

Hospitality and transportation, in particular, have experienced a decline in revenue due to reduced travel amid COVID-19. Although holiday travel is bound to look a little different this year, recent trends have many Americans considering their plans for the upcoming holiday season. According to Hopper’s new Holiday Travel Confidence Report, 39% of people say they plan to travel during the holidays this year, while 21% do not plan to travel like they would in a typical year. The upcoming holiday season will mark the first time many Americans take a trip since spring 2020. The hospitality and transportation sectors are considering the resources necessary to provide a safe, contactless travel experience.

State-of-the-art digital display solutions can provide a dynamic resource to inform, engage and entertain Blogtravelers in airports. Interactive wayfinding can eliminate overcrowded transportation hubs by enabling passengers to navigate busy terminals and unfamiliar layouts by guiding them to their destination. Planar, a leading provider of display technology, empowers travelers to get to their destinations safely with vivid, ultra-high-resolution displays to provide crisp and vibrant directional signage. On digital signage displays placed throughout high-traffic areas, travelers can view preplanned routes to baggage claims, food courts and additional terminals.

Interactive wayfinding displays can be positioned at hotel entrances or reception desks, alongside thermal-screening technology (our recent blog highlights the future of thermal screening technology), to help manage building capacity and control high-traffic pathways. Many interactive displays can accommodate touch-free voice control so guests can speak with the hotel concierge, scan a QR code (our latest blog highlights the power of QR code accessibility) for contactless room check-in or view real-time travel alerts and updated news. Cloud-based digital signage solutions can control every display to provide customized messaging in lobbies, restaurants, casinos, bars and even guest rooms.

“As the global market leader in narrow pixel pitch LED and an industry leader in LCD display solutions, Planar works with leading transportation and hospitality companies around the globe,” said Dani Lamaestra, business development manager of transportation for Planar. “We deliver unsurpassed visual performance for a wide range of information display needs, ensuring digital communication is delivered confidently and effectively. Our commitment to introducing groundbreaking display innovations allows our customers to both evolve and stay one step ahead of today’s ever-changing digital signage industry.”

With many Americans considering holiday travel, there’s an opportunity for hospitality and transportation industries to showcase the future of safe, contactless travel. As a licensed Planar dealer, AV Planners can design and implement high-quality display solutions for contactless messaging and digital wayfinding.
