Healthcare: Improving the Patient Experience Through Technology

virtual healthcare · Craig Heiman · Jun 22, 20

Technology is now an integral part of healthcare. Patients are driving new trends in healthcare, like convenient care options (e.g., same-day, in-person or virtual visits) and the automated delivery of data (e.g., apps and websites that offer the patient the ability to instantly see test results, schedule appointments, pay bills, request refills, etc.).

The adoption of new technology is enhancing the interaction among patients, doctors and specialty physicians. Here’s how we see the future of technology transforming healthcare to create a calming and safe in-office and virtual healthcare experience:

Improving the Patient Experience

A good patient experience begins before even entering the healthcare office. The intelligent use of technology allows patients to schedule an appointment through a mobile application or intuitive website. Once the patient arrives for their appointment, they’ll check in with their phone by scanning a QR (quick response) code located on a digital signage display at the entrance. The digital signage will verify the patient's temperature, outline the office procedures (such as mask requirements) and provide estimated wait times. Meanwhile, the QR code will prompt patients to update their digital health records and log any symptoms they’re currently experiencing. A calming, spa-like office with an open layout will create a safe and soothing environment while the patient waits for their appointment.

A traditional examination room will be outfitted with video and audio technology that enables the patient and onsite healthcare workers to interact with the doctor virtually and reduce person-to-person contact. The doctor can connect with the patient while in the same building (but in a separate room), or they can telecommute from a surgery facility, secondary office or Female doctor using her digital tabletother workspace to eliminate their daily commute between offices but still provide patients with exceptional one-on-one care.

Enhancing Patient and Physician Communication

According to a study from the American Hospital Association, 76% of U.S. hospitals connect with patients and consulting practitioners at a distance utilizing technology — this is known as telehealth. Doctors can connect with patients remotely while still providing customized, one-on-one care through communication technology. This technology could include:

  • High-resolution video displays that allow remote healthcare providers to see a clear picture of the patient and make an accurate diagnosis. The display images can be captured and stored in an EHR (electronic health record) to deliver safe, secure patient information.
  • Reliable audio technology — including microphones, speakers and acoustic treatments — that enables clear communication between the healthcare provider and the patient while video conferencing.
  • Huddle rooms that create a space for patients to connect and collaborate with doctors, specialists and other healthcare providers — offering consistent, quality care through concise communication.
  • Robust network security that abides by the Security Rule of HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). The Security Rule requires organizations that handle protected health information (PHI) to institute safeguards that ensure patient confidentiality.

The physical care received by patients from healthcare professionals is only one piece of the complex puzzle for recovery and wellness. A positive patient experience depends upon the communication provided by healthcare workers and doctors. The advancement of new technology is allowing healthcare providers to practice medicine in new, exciting ways.
